Jan holds a diploma in computer science and bioinformatics (specialization in molecular biology) with versatile experience gained during his professional occupation in the life science industry (2007 – 2010), the time of his doctoral thesis (2010 – 2013, Dr. rer. nat.) and the ongoing work in science as a research scientist. His research at the forefront of bioinformatics allowed him to develop novel methods for challenges and questions in a variety of fields such as in phylogenomics and genome-based taxonomy of prokaryotes, viruses and fungi. Since August 2023, Jan leads the Bioinformatics Core Facility of the University of Augsburg, Germany.
He scientifically designs, develops and establishes state-of-the-art bioinformatic methods, databases and high-throughput systems to enable fellow researchers finding answers to scientific questions which were previously not addressable or only hardly so. The popular Genome-to-Genome Distance Calculator (GGDC), the Type Strain Genome Server (TYGS) or the Virus Classification and Tree Building Online Resource (VICTOR) are a few highly-cited examples of his work. The positive reception of Jan’s work within the scientific community resulted in his inclusion in the lists of “Highly Cited Researchers 2020 – 2023” as awarded by the Web of Science™ supported by well over 16,000 citations since the beginning of his academic career.
